SEAFARER WELLBEING
“We believe the safety of a ship begins with the wellbeing
of its crew. And while others may focus on physical
conditions or compliance checklists, we’ve chosen a
broader, more human approach – one that looks beyond
the vessel and into the lives of those who sail,” said
Nordberg.
In 2024, the Club expanded its wellbeing initiatives with
a range of new resources which address the oftenoverlooked social pressures of maritime life. These
include a practical guide for seafarers’ families and the
children’s book Our Family and the Sea, which is being
translated into several languages.
Check Your Pulse is not only focused on physical health
but “paying attention to the deeper pulse, the rhythm of
our seafarers, our onboard culture and the families who
stand behind our crew,” said Nordberg. “This holistic
approach sets us apart, spanning six key areas: food and
nutrition, exercise, mental health, fatigue, organisational
support, and family connection. Because real care means
supporting the whole person, not just one part of their life.”
The work done by The Swedish Club’s Loss Prevention
Team is about so much more than just reducing claims;
it’s a proactive approach to safeguarding people,
operations and reputation.
“At its core, it’s an expression of care: care for crew,
vessels and the wider maritime community. Through
training, including online loss prevention, emergency
response and webinars, we ensure our members,
and their crews, are equipped to act con昀椀dently and
competently.”
The Loss Prevention Team’s wide focus takes in the
entire ecosystem around the seafarer: family, physical
health, mental health and company culture.
Initiatives such as TELP (Trade-Enabling Loss
Prevention) and digital analytics use data-driven
insights to identify risks early and provide preventive
measures before issues escalate – “and with proactive
information like member alerts, publications and monthly
safety scenarios, we foster a culture of awareness and
preparedness.”
The Swedish Club is proud to be part of an industry built
on strength, resilience and expertise. Equally vital – the
people behind that strength and why supporting them is
imperative for success. “It’s our shared responsibility to
care for those who dedicate their lives to working at sea.”
The AGM Members’ Day was moderated by Phil Parry,
Chairman of Spinnaker Global. The speakers were Simon
Grainge, CEO of ISWAN; Tim Ponath, CEO of NSB Group;
Captain Ann Pletschke; Professor Neil Greenberg of
King’s College London; and Charles Watkins, CEO of
MHSS. The morning was wrapped up by motivational
speaker Clas Malmström, who blended science and
humour in a strong message that we are all responsible
for proactively looking after our own health.
