FEATURES
Phase 1: Stabilization and Assessment. Crews began by
anchoring the vessel and flooding forward tanks to prevent
uncontrolled movement. Divers and salvage engineers
carried out underwater and topside inspections to assess
hull integrity and internal damage. Sensors were placed on
the bridge structure and dedicated teams conducted 24/7
monitoring to ensure structural integrity and crew safety.
Phase 2: Cargo Removal and Demolition Planning. Container
removal—some stacked over 37 meters high—was conducted
methodically. Many containers were damaged, some
contained hazardous materials, and others were precariously
positioned. In parallel, structural engineers began planning for
the removal of the bridge span resting on the bow.
Phase 3: Demolition and Refloating. After careful analysis,
controlled demolition was identi昀椀ed as the safest method to
remove the bridge segment. After approvals from multiple
agencies and authorities, shape charges were placed and

monitored under strict safety protocols. The demolition itself
took less than a minute and proceeded as planned.
Fifty-昀椀ve days after the allision, the MV Dali was successfully
refloated and moved from the channel—well ahead of early
estimates.
Hazardous Cargo and Environmental
Considerations
The casualty caused chemical leaks and container breaches,
mixing hazardous materials with other cargoes like soybeans,
paper goods and deer hides. Some reactions produced
hydrogen sulphide gas and pockets of explosive hydrogen.
