Lessons from the
MSC Flaminia:
How Dedication and Diligence
Helped Deliver Justice in a
Landmark Case
On 14 July 2012, a catastrophic explosion tore through
the MSC Flaminia, a 6,732 TEU container vessel, in the
middle of the Atlantic. The incident cost three lives, injured
two more, and triggered one of the most protracted and
complex court cases in maritime history.
Yet for The Swedish Club, the story is not just one of tragedy,
it is also one of resolute professionalism, meaningful
collaboration, and unwavering support. The eventual ruling,
which cleared the ship’s owner Conti Reederei and ship
manager NSB of all liability, stands as a testament to the value
of robust management systems, expert claims handling, and
an insurer that genuinely stands by its members.
would later be revealed that hazardous chemical cargo had
decomposed and ignited. The Flaminia, at the time, was midAtlantic, having loaded cargo from U.S. and Mexican ports and

about money. But it is different with The Swedish Club; I
can vouch for that,” said Sanne Hauschildt, then part of
NSB’s claims team. “The team at The Swedish Club, fronted
by an amazing man, Benny Johansson, helped guide us and
the shipowner throughout the entire case, not only by their
expertise, but financially.”
Hands-On Support in a Tangle of Jurisdictions
A Challenging Casualty with Unprecedented
Complexity
From the moment the call came in, Benny Johansson led the
response on behalf of The Swedish Club.
The explosion happened just after 08:00 on 14 July. It followed

From navigating salvage operations in Wilhelmshaven to

there were no long discussions; we were all on the same page
and it was clear that The Swedish Club was there to help us.”
