now released its companion guide:
Our Family and the Sea: A Check
Your Pulse Wellbeing Guide for
Seafarers and Their Loved Ones.
Developed again in collaboration
with MHSS, the guide builds on the
story’s foundation and provides
essential support for families
navigating the unique challenges of
life at sea.
The guide offers practical advice
and psychological insights to help
families manage long-distance
relationships with empathy and
resilience. Each chapter focuses
on the different stages of a child’s
development - from toddler to
teenager - and explores emotional
needs, coping mechanisms, and
communication strategies during
separation and reunion. It also
tackles the emotional transitions
around embarkation and return,
helping families prepare for and
navigate these critical moments.
Strong family connections give
seafarers peace of mind while at sea,
directly enhancing their wellbeing.
The Swedish Club believes that to
truly support a seafarer, the industry
must also support their families,
making sure every member feels
seen, heard, and understood.
Charles Watkins, MHSS’ CEO who
is also a Clinical Psychologist,
emphasises: “Life at sea can be
tough, not just for seafarers but
also for those waiting at home.

“Life at sea can be tough, not just for
seafarers but also for those waiting
at home. This guide, as with the
storybook, is about starting meaningful
conversations and offering tools that
make those conversations easier and
more productive.”

Both the picture book and the
wellbeing guide are part of The
Swedish Club’s Check Your Pulse
initiative, which aims to address
the human factors behind seafarer
health and safety. By strengthening
the emotional connection between
ship and shore, the initiative
promotes not just wellbeing, but a
safer and more supportive working
environment at sea.
Our Family and the Sea and the
accompanying Check Your Pulse
Wellbeing Guide for Seafarers and
Their Loved Ones are available
now, underscoring The Swedish
Club’s ongoing commitment to
seafarer welfare, family unity, and
safety at sea.
